Pacific Highway Upgrade Woolgoolga to Ballina Road Bridge infrastructure by CM+

CM+ provided the urban and landscape design for Portion A (45 of 155 kilometres) of the $4.36b upgrade to the Pacific Highway from Woolgoolga to Ballina on the NSW North Coast, which was opened in 2020.

The roadway partly diverts from the existing highway, passing through ecologically sensitive areas of bushland with great natural beauty. The design integrates the project into its landscape context, preserving and enhancing local flora and fauna habitats where possible.

There are 43 bridges designed by CM+ for the project and two rest areas with feature interchanges at Glenugie, Tyndale and Maclean to alert road users of nearby towns. These provide opportunities for placemaking, wayfinding and enhancement of the driver experience while improving driver safety.

An integrated approach to urban design combined with well considered engineering ensures a high design outcome for the project. The implementation of the proposed mitigation measures will ensure that the significance of the social, cultural and ecological values are maintained or enhanced throughout the project.
