Sydney Gateway will provide a toll free, high capacity connection to the International and Domestic Terminals at Sydney Airport. The project will improve traffic flow and reduce travel time through its connection to WestConnex at the recently completed St Peters Interchange (also by CM+). The project is part of the government’s initiatives to improve road and freight rail through Sydney Airport and Port Botany, reducing local road traffic and strengthening connections to these strategic hubs.

CM+ are the project urban designers, ensuring Sydney Gateway provides a memorable ‘gateway’ experience for all users arriving and departing Sydney Airport – from the road, in the air, or on the ground.

The design capitalises on opportunities to create visual landmarks in the landscape, assisting with project legibility and orientation, providing a multi-dimensional, visual journey as you traverse the project.

Art is integrated into project elements, creating a large scale environmental artwork that speaks of a ‘Connection to Country’ and the project’s gateway location on the threshold of Sydney Airport.

The Active Transport Link provides a major placemaking opportunity, with increased public open space and connections between Tempe reserve and the Sydney CBD. Interpretive elements reference the history and evolution of Shea’s Creek, Alexandra Canal, Botany Rail Line and Sydney Airport through materiality, landscape and heritage interpretation.

The design team has worked to create a fully integrated outcome that balances urban design, engineering with the end user experience to delivering enduring value for the project.
