Snug Cove Urban Design by CM+

CM+ has prepared the design of the Marine Operations Administration
building and master plan to guide the future of Snug Cove in Eden, NSW.

CM+ has provided master planning, architecture and public domain design services in an integrated design response for improvements to the Snug Cove Maritime Precinct on Turemulerrer (Twofold Bay), Eden. The project will improve the harbour’s functionality as a working port, supporting its marine related industries and revitalisation of the foreshore will enhance Snug Cove’s recent evolution as a port for cruise ships, ultimately strengthening Eden’s economic development .

The Snug Cove masterplan provides a coordinated approach to development and public domain improvements within the precinct. These include a new waterfront plaza with provision for food and beverage kiosks, a foreshore boardwalk and new public amenities, ensuring the public domain is suitable for a projected increase in visitors.

A new two storey building for Marine Operations Administration hugs the Cove’s shoreline and takes advantage of panoramic views across Turemulerrer. It provides maritime administration offices, as well as maintenance facilities and amenities for boats and their crews moored in the adjacent boat storage facility.

The architectural design considers siting and implements biophilic principles that consider the adjacent escarpment native bushland, rocks, ocean, distant mountain and the adjoining beach. The building is elevated above ground level, implementing a ‘touching the earth lightly’ concept to minimise hazards and impacts on the existing landscape.

A careful selection of construction methods and materials was needed across the project to achieve a high level of sustainability, low maintenance and resilience to flooding, maritime and ecological sensitivities.

The Snug Cove precinct has a rich history, from the area’s strong connections to the Aboriginal history of the Yuin people, to the more recent whaling, forestry, and fishing industries. Heritage and cultural design opportunities, including future collaboration with the local Aboriginal community have been included in the masterplan and referenced in the concept design.
