CM+ Sydney Gateway

Sydney Gateway is a world-class infrastructure project providing a high capacity, toll free connection to Sydney Airport’s International and Domestic Terminals Airport. It improves traffic flow and reduces travel times through delivery of a new connection to WestConnex at St Peters Interchange. CM+ provided urban design and landscape architecture services as part of the project team, including for the 3 kilometre active transport link along Alexandra Canal.

The urban design concept is based upon the user experience through movement and time by individuals using this infrastructure, to provide connection to place and a sense of wayfinding. It can be perceived in three ways:

  1. Driver experience – along the roadway, one that is of a fast and direct movement at a regional scale.
  2. Pedestrian / cyclist experience – meandering through the various precincts through the Active Transport Link (ATL) corridor along the banks of Alexandra Canal, at local scale, perceived as individual elements in a varied landscape.
  3. Aerial experience – as experienced from the air, on approach or departure, due to proximity to the north-south runway.

Working closely with Cultural Capital and the Rewrite Collective, a Connection to Country is provided through development of art interventions across the project that interpret the area’s Aboriginal and cultural heritage. These artworks, curated through a co-design process are experienced as you move through, around and above your Sydney Gateway journey.
