CM+ has been appointed to provide the urban design elements for the new Bridgewater Bridge Project. It is the biggest transport infrastructure project in Tasmania’s history and a critical link in Tasmania’s freight corridor.

The Bridgewater bridge is a bridge over the Derwent River located about 20km from Hobart. It forms part of a major road transport link which connects Hobart to the regional network. It also serves as an important freight corridor between Bernie and Hobart and connects Central Hobart with the growing communities in Brighton, Bridgewater, and Granton and the freight distribution centres in Glenorchy.

Create a gateway experience that is inspired by the landscape and cultural character of the region, through its simplicity and elegance in design to provide a free flowing and a safe transport corridor that is seamlessly integrated into its naturally iconic setting, contributing to a sense of place.

Key elements of the NBBP include:

  • A four-lane bridge over the Derwent River between Bridgewater and Granton
  • Additional two bridges over local roads on the northern and southern sides of the river
  • Shared path facilities along the western side of the bridge and connections to the neighbourhood to the north and south
  • A grade separation of the Lyell Highway and Black Snake Road junctions and connecting ramps with Gunn Street, Bridgewater and Old main Road at Bridgewater including road widening into and out of these intersessions
  • Earthworks associated with the bridge at the banks and part of the road widening works
  • Demolition of the existing Bridgewater Bridge once the new crossing has been commissioned

A layered approach has been adopted for the design of project elements, strengthening the contextual relationship between the adjacent mountains and the river. Opportunities to integrate Indigenous and Non-Indigenous interpretive art into the project have been provided for development by local artists.
